Default Totally messed up after an improper shutdown

My PC (Windows ME) froze yesterday evening when it was shutting down so i held in the power button to turn it off, now when i turn it on it comes up in 16 colour mode and the resolution is all wrong, really chunky, basically looks like Safe Mode, but it isn't.

Also i have lost the use of my mouse... you would not believe how long it has taken me to navigate my way onto here and post this message using just my keyboard, tabbing through every link on each page (especially since i had to request a new password, log onto my email to activate it etc..)

I have tried going to my display settings (in normal mode & safe mode) and changing the colours and resolution back to what they should be, it says i must restart before it takes affect, however when i restart nothing has changed.

I tried to do a system restore but my computer seems to think it has no restore points available to go back to, so that's a no-go.

If anyone could help me i would greatly appreciate it, thanks.

Wow, well done on managing to post!

You may have to re-download your motherboard and vga drivers. Do you have a disc? If not, just post your PC make and model number or motherboard/vga hardware model numbers.

The only useful disc i have is Recovery CD, but would that clear my C drive? and i think i somehow put part of windows onto the D drive by mistake a couple years ago when i was installing it, i wouldn't want the recovery CD to target my D drive because of this, as there are other files on the D drive i want to keep.

I'm not sure what my motherboard number is, but my PC is a Compaq Presario 5139EA, and i haven't installed motherboard or VGA drivers before so bear that in mind if you have any other advice, thanks for your help so far by the way.

Unfortunately that seems to have had no effect at all, it installed correctly and re-booted but it still displays in the wrong resolution with 16 colours, and there is still no mouse. (the mouse itself actually works because i can use the mouse fine in safe mode)

thanks though i appreciate your effort to help
