Lightbulb [Pending] drive not found...but I can see it!

Hello,
hoping someone here can help me "find" my lost drive, and all my family pics. One day, the D drive just disappeared. I have 2 HDDs (1x16 G and 1 x 40 G), and CD burner and a DVD ROM, labeled C, D, E and F respectively. One day, the D drive just disappeared. My link to open it gave me an error, it's no longer showing under My Computer.

I checked all the physical connections, and everything seems fine to my uneducated eyes...

I can "see" it when I boot up, enter setup, and even under System Properties - Device Manager - Disk Drives. It's a Maxtor. According to the System properties page, it currently has no letter assigned to it, but that area is grey-ed out, so I can't assign a letter unless I call it a removable drive...I tried that, but then it wants to format it, and tells me there is 0% used space, so that doesn't work, as I have a ton of stuff on there...

I don't need it to work for long, just long enough to save a bunch of my files to disk to I can transfer them to my new computer...Any Ideas?

I am curious why it would just 'forget' the drive exists in the first place, but, frankly, I've had so many issues with it that nothing really surprises me anymore...

Thanks...for the welcome and the advise...I don't have that particular menu option in my control panel (running 98 with office 97), but while searching for it, to see if it live somewhere else, I stumbled onto a Maintenance Wizard, which could also see my D drive, and after some file repairs, it's also appearing in My Computer.

That said, when I click it, I get the pop up message D:\ is not accessible.
A device attached to the system is not working

Any ideas? I really want to get my pictures off of there...
