Question [Answered] win 98 install probs :(

I have bought a second hand PC without any oporating system on it. When I tried to install windows 98, it said I didn't have enough memory on the C: Drive, so I eventually managed to fix this by formatting the C drive...but now whenever I try and run 98 setup, I get this message after a few seconds adn don't know how to fix it:

"SETUP DETECTION MESSAGE
Message SU0013
Setup cannot create files on your start up drive and cannot set up windows 98.
If you have HPFS or NTFS, you must create an MS-DOS boot partition. If you have LANtastic server or Superstar compression, disable it before running setup. See setup.txt on setup disk 1 or the windows 98 compact disc."

The computer doesn't have a floppy drive and it didnt' come with a boot disk. I don't even know what 'setup disk 1' is. I opened fdisk as that's apparently how I create partitions, I made a primary dos partition of 8mb, but my formatted c drive (38gig) turned into a D drive and the windows setup could not access the C drive. So I have to delete the primary partition, leaving the extended dos partition, restart the comp and format the C drive again! Then I'm back to where I started. Ayn help or advice would be very welcome! Thanks

Hi and welcome to PCHF!

What did you format the drive to FAT32 or NTFS? I have a feeling you did NTFS and 98 can't recognize NTFS, it has to be FAT32. I would highly recommend getting Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP. Just an fyi, Windows 98 is no longer supported by Micrsoft and you will not receieve security updates.

Thanks,
Adam
