Question [Pending] Windows ME display and error problems

When I started my computer this morning it came up with a 600X400 resolution, no sound, and no mouse. I consistantly got Kernel32.DLL errors when opening new windows, and the resolution would not change even after I changed it at display properties(and restarted).

I ran an updated AVG virus scan, trojan scan, adware scan, and spybot scan. I also ran scandisk.

I had a similiar problem about 5 months ago and simply ran a system restore to a couple days before and it fixed the problem. However, I tried to run it again this time and it doesn't work . After setting the system restore, the computer automatically restarts but on the restart it comes up with a "Rstrui has caused an error in KERNELL32.DLL" and then in the system restore window it says the system restore could not be completed. I did/tried the system restore both in Safe Mode and Normal Mode. The computer is almost 6 years old and could easily have just run out of steam.

BUT any suggestions or recommendations would be great. Remember I can't use my mouse so complex navigation well be tough. Thanks for the help!

I'm sorry for this as it's a pretty generic answer.

I havent worked with ME before or atleast not troubleshooting but it's widely regarded as one of the worst operating systems MS have come out with.

Is there any possibility you could get hold of a 2000/XP disk/license?

If not do you have access to an ME disk? as this will probably make things easier

Also, don't be afraid to give me "drastic" advice. I'd like to use this one for as long as possible, but i don't have much on the computer that i need to "save" in terms of information.

Windows ME is notorious for being the worst OS that microsoft has ever released. As soon as you get this problem fixed, another problem is going to come up. You can get Windows 2000 Professional fairly cheap now. Anything that works in XP also works in 2000 so that would be to your advantage. Even to go back in time to Windows 98 would be better than Win ME.

I can remember having this same problem when I ran Windows ME. I had winME for two weeks before I could not stand it anymore. I went back to win98.

I used ME for a very short period of time and realized it was not for me. You have to almost reinstall it every 6 months to keep it working. Now, the disk makes a fairly descent coaster!!
