Unhappy [Resolved] Windows 98se from bootdisk.com

Hi,
I was wondering if the windows 98se OEM download at bootdisk.com is the full OS. I don't know very much about operating systems. I just bought a laptop for my daughter's birthday Saturday(it's an older model, all I could afford rigt now) and it doesn't have an operating system. It came with a Linux cd, but i can't figure it out and it says I'm in low memory mode and then it went into setting up partitions and my head started to spin. So I thought I'd get a windows 98 OS instead. Plus my daughter knows how to use Windows. I looked on ebay and there were a bunch of 98se OEM's for sale, but then I found bootdisk.com and wondered if it was the real operating system, and if it is, how do you turn a winimage file into a bootable disk.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to PCHF

I'm sorry but the disk is only the files you need to prepare for the installation of Windows 98SE (OEM). You will still need to purchase a full operating system

If you get a Windows 98se cd on line make sure it comes with the product key or you will not be able to install windows. Check if you can get into BIOS setup because the boot disk you get may not drive the CD ROM. If you can get into BIOS you can change how the computer boots up. Normally a computer will begin by looking for whats in the A drive and if its a system disk will follow the instructions there. With the windows CD installed you will choose 1 'Start with CD ROM support', if it goes well the CD rom will begin to load windows if not- you can change the BIOS setup to start with the CD rom on boot up, when you turn the computer on it will boot from the CD and load window, you can than go back and change the BIOS setup back to the way it was. Dont format or try to partition the drive- the CD will do that for you. Be carefull messing around in BIOS- check the post how to get into it first. Good luck. One thing I am learning about computers- they make you go through a lot of reading!

Hi rbcopytech, this thread was created on 04-04-2007 so it's over 5 months old.
I understand you were trying to help, but I wouldn't expect a reply
