Currently I have a computer that has windows 98 on it. When I boot up the computer it gets the the Widows 98 Screen and then doesn't move from their. I have a boot disk, but can't find my Windows 98 CD. What do you think the problem is or What do you think I should do?

Hello Fritz,

Welcome to PCHF.

At this point fritz, your problem could be absolutely anything! You have not had any error messages at any point? What was the last thing that happened before this problem started (such as installed/uninstalled software for example)? Are you able to get into safe mode by tapping F8 just past the initial post screen, and selecting Safe Mode from there?

I don't remeber because it has been quite a few years since i last operated the machine. When i get to safe mode it runs through some stuff and then give me the A:/ prompt.

ey? How on earth is it asking for A:. We are talking about safe mode here? because it sounds like your using your startup disks at this point?

I started the computer in safe mode and all I get is the screen that has the windows 98 plus screen with the clouds in the background. I've let the computer sit on that screen for 30 minutes and nothing happens. So now what is the problem or what should I do.

Hi fritz,

Remove the disk out of the drive and reboot - once you get past the initial screen of detecting hard drives...tap the F8 button until you get a new menu.

Choose Step-by-step confirmation
Say Yes to everything slowly...and remember the last one each time, that way when it stops loading - you know what has caused it to stop.

Restart it, and do it all again - but selecting No on the one that caused the problem last time.

The biggest problem here, is that Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, or newer hardware. You won't even be able to find a new Windows 98 CD anywhere.
