Default Installing win98se

I have a computer that has windows 98 on it, I don't have the disks that was used to install win98 on it, but I do have a win98se CD and Floppy disk, it say's on the disk"for computers without windows" I would like to wipe the computer clean and install windows 98se on it.

It has a small hard disk 1.19GB, and only a drive C: I have tried using a boot disk and then tried to "format C:" to wipe the hard drive, but when I typed it in it was "formatC:" there was no space after C:, and it would not let you type in the space. What am I doing wrong? What would be the best way to install this wind98se? I have not had to do this before, reinstalling win98se that is, so I hope someone could help. Have read a little bit about using fdisk to partition the drive, but not sure, but willing to try if had instructions.

thanks,
trekwatcher

Hey Trek,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a terrific team of techs here, and I know we can get you up and running.

First of all, please boot your PC using your bootble disk, when you get to the command prompt, type in FDISK. This will take you to a utility that will allow you to wipe all of your partitions, and recreate them. Answer Y to the question regarding large disk support.

Once you delete and recreate the partition, then you will be able to use the Format command again, and it should format correctly.

If you need step by step instructions just let me know, I wrote a very detailed tutorial last year for one of our users, and I will need to locate it for you. But that shouldn't take too long.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Hey Trek,

I would be happy to, I think that they are still on my old PC. Shouldn't take too long to locate.

Be back as soon as possible.

Hey there, I have done this many times, so here is what I do.

Start compuer with floppy in drive. type "FDISK" when at the a: prompt.
Delete all existing partitions, using the 4th menu I think, then create a primary DOS partition, using the first menu.
Restart computer, and type "format c: /s" at the DOS prompt.
restart again, this time with CD rom support. type setup.exe in your CD rom prompt, (usually D: \ or E:\ and you should be good to go!

Just be aware that 1.19 GB is hardly enough to get around on anymore, but I'm sure your aware of that
