Hi Madmonkey,

I´m using the instructions you gave me for installing windows. I used fdisk, formatted. Now I booted the computer and did a "sys c:" My question-

it says to "CD into the /i386 folder and run winnt.exe from the command line." What does this mean?

Question 2- is it possible to put the smartdrv program on my bootdisk? how does that work?

thanks,
mason

Hi hiatt, sorry for the delay. Some of these web sites do forget that a lot of people installing Windows have never done it before, and some things are not really explained properly.

Q1:
First change the drive letter to whichever your cd-rom drive is at, for example:
d:

Change the directory to i386 using the "cd" command, for example:
cd i386

To run a program, just type in the name of it, for example:
winnt.exe

Q2:
This boot disk I believe includes smartdrv, you can download from here:
Windows 98 SE Custom, No Ramdrive | Mirror

Hi Madmonkey,

I booted up with the disk with smartdrv. I put the smartdrv.exe command for the c drive. Is this right? A whole bunch of stuff came up about smartdrv that i didn´t understand, but i figured it wasn´t important since nobody said anything- ignored it.

Then I went into the x drive (on this boot disk, the cdrom becomes x) and cd i386, and then winnt.exe.

It all started! i was so excited! But now it stopped while it was copying the files and says it couldn´t copy appsr~1.cls What do I do now? arrgggh.

Hi hiatt, make sure the surface of the CD is clean and there are no scratches on the CD. That's the only real thing that tends to stop these files from being copied is either disk space (don't think so since your have formatted?), or problems with the CD itself.

Hi Madmonkey,

It worked! I rounded up another copy of 2000, and this one, although it looked dirtier than the other, installed with no problems. So now I'm busy downloading the essentials- anti-virus, firefox, etc.

Are there any drivers that I'm missing? You had said something about drivers...

Thanks so much for your help. I'll be back here with more questions, sure thing.

cheers,
mason
