-madmonkey,

Plug my hdd into a friend´s computer? This sounds beyond my abilities. Does that involve opening up and physically removing it? Or is it more like creating a network connection? I did used to have a network connection with my wife´s computer...

cheers,
hiatt

Sorry hiatt, missed or forgot about #17, didn't realise it was a laptop. Yep, it should take Windows 2000 - borderline. Do you have the drivers you need for Windows 2000?

TBH setting up a network connection is more complicated than unplugging a hard drive from inside your PC, especially with the condition it is at the moment. Normally, there is just 1 screw at the back or side of the laptop holding the plasic cover on, 1 screw to hold HDD in place and will normally slide out or a small plug connected to it. Since it is a laptop, you will also need to purchase a hard drive caddy (2.5in Icy Box HDD Enclosure)

This site may also be of help: Laptop Hard Drive Guide/Compatibility

If it's just a few very small documents that will fit onto floppy disk, and you know exactly where they are save to, I can talk you through copying them to floppy?

I looked at the icy box- so you hook the hard drive into that case, and the case has a usb plug you can plug into another computer? If that´s true i think i can manage. I only have the courage to open up my own computer, not my wife´s! I think I should be able to find one of those in Brazil.

No, I don´t have the drivers, and I´ll even have to round up a copy of 2000. Slowly, but surely...

cheers,
hiatt

You won't even need to take you wife computer apart with that caddy, just plug it into a usb slot, nice and easy.

In the meantime, I'll gather all the 2000 drivers you need from here, and then post download links for you. You will then need to download them onto a CD, floppy, pen stick or onto the HDD of your caddy after Windows is installed. Is this OK?

Hi Madmonkey,

I rounded up a copy of 2000. I decided to take my computer to a tech who said he can create a backup disk of my hard drive. It will be cheaper and easier than buying the caddy. So, today or tomorrow I should be ready to reformat and install 2000. What´s the best site to go to for tips on installing 2000? Do you have any advice?

thanx,
hiatt
