Hi Madmonkey, I will try and round up a copy of windows 98 and install it. After that I go in the control panel section and look at hardware, right? and make note of the hardware for you. Great.

Hi Uncleed,

The computer with windows 98 is mine, it´s a Toshiba Portégé 7000CT Laptop. Model name/No.Portege 7000CT / PAP700Uxx ProcessorIntel Mobile Pentium II Memory(MAX)32/160 HDD4.3 DisplayDisplay12.1 TFT 800x600 Display controllerNeoMagic(6120)w/128-bit Data Bus Width Video RAM2 SoundYamaha 3D sound OPL3-SA3 PC Card controllerTypeIIx2 TypeIIIx1 USBx2 ModemK56flex with DSVD LAN10/100BaseT Ethernet(Intel) Last update11-27-2002

I don´t actually have the installation disk, I´m going to try and get it from a friend. I take it that it needs to be an the installation disk and not the recovery disk?

I posted on the XP forum about the computer I´m presently writing from, my girlfriend´s, on which i installed some silly palm top album program that now doesn´t want to leave... another story.

Again, Thanks for everything, this is a great forum. I love D.I.Y computer mechanics!

Hi Madmonkey,

Thanks for checking in. I stepped out for a while- here in Brazil it was Carnaval until noon today. So, I was relaxing a bit and only thought a few times about my poor computer.

Two thoughts, now that I have to reinstall windows. What are the chances of saving whatīs on my hard drive? There are a few things on there i didnīt manage to backup (live and learn)...

Second question is: should I move to windows 2000 now that 98 is obsolete? I did manage to round up a 98 install CD from a friend, but itīs not SE and from what I read here, there are some important differences between the two. In the end 2000 seems like it will be a little more, letīs say "modern"? Ha.

But I am very interested in learning how to do the reinstall myself!

Thanks again,
Hiatt

Hey Hiatt,

By the sounds of it your entire Windows directory is missing, so I wouldn't get your hopes up about your files being there also, but there is a chance. The easiest way would be to use another PC, a freinds PC perhaps and fit the HDD into there. Bootup and copy the files you need that way.

Also, if you can give me your PC spec's, I can tell you if it would be compatible with 2000. 2000 is also obsolute in that it is no longer supported by Microsoft, however it is still used and much more stable than 98.

-madmonkey,

Plug my hdd into a friend´s computer? This sounds beyond my abilities. Does that involve opening up and physically removing it? Or is it more like creating a network connection? I did used to have a network connection with my wife´s computer...

cheers,
hiatt

Sorry hiatt, missed or forgot about #17, didn't realise it was a laptop. Yep, it should take Windows 2000 - borderline. Do you have the drivers you need for Windows 2000?

TBH setting up a network connection is more complicated than unplugging a hard drive from inside your PC, especially with the condition it is at the moment. Normally, there is just 1 screw at the back or side of the laptop holding the plasic cover on, 1 screw to hold HDD in place and will normally slide out or a small plug connected to it. Since it is a laptop, you will also need to purchase a hard drive caddy (2.5in Icy Box HDD Enclosure)

This site may also be of help: Laptop Hard Drive Guide/Compatibility

If it's just a few very small documents that will fit onto floppy disk, and you know exactly where they are save to, I can talk you through copying them to floppy?
