Default [Answered] Upgrading from Windows 98se to xp.

Hello. I am very new to this and hope and doing it right. I have a computer windows 98 se that I would like to upgrade if at all possible as am on a very tight budget right now. I do not know if my computer is able to do this and do not want to invest in the xp cd if cannot work with my 98. I have downloaded an UPGRADE REPORT to see if it is compatible. I do not have a clue what it is saying so still confused. Would anyone be willing to look at what I have typed from the report below. Can anyone help? I am sorry but don't know much about computers. It says that "setup found hardware or software on your computer that might not or will not work with windows xp......warning the following issues might require you to obtain files from Microsft Windows Update Web site .......the following hardward might need additional files.....Dot4 HPZ12 psc 211 (Dot4), Dot4 Setup Hphp psc 2100 series (that is my printer and does work with windows xp as have used a rental right now which is an xp) Dot4 Usb HPZ12 psc 2100, Hard Disk controllers Digital Camera Disk device USB Mass Storage Device not currently present, Imaging Device hp psc 2100 series Oregon Scientific Stream Driver not currently present, Veo mobile/Advanced Web Camera not currentl present (assume that is just about my digital camera?, MODEM CONEXANT SOFTK56 PCI MODEM, SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS CRYSTAL AUDIO CODEC GAME DEVICE.................Software that does not support windows.........Java plug-in in control panel, SPEECH in control panel WILDTANGENT CONTROL PANEL in control panel.........Mouseware is incompatible.......OTHER UPGRADE INFORMATION.....mICROSFOT dIRECTX 9.0 TO MAINTAIN COMPATIBILIEY WITH YOUR DIRECTX 9.0 YOU WIll need to download the DirectX 9.0 update for Windows XP, Windows XP SP1 and Windows Server 2003 from Microsoft Windows Update. Thank you so much if you are able to give me some advice as to whether I can upgrade or not is so much appreciated. Thanks, Sue

Hello MsSue,

Welcome to PCHF.

All of these drivers you listed are fine, there are drivers for all of these in Windows XP, and I can provide you to the links to download these. Most immediately, can you provide me with the specifications of your PC?

Hello Sue

Welcome to PC Help Forums
It is possible you can copy that entire report and paste it back here in a Notepad form and as an attachment, (see managing attachments when you reply)?
Upgrades can cause all kinds of problems and I would recommend a brand new install using a fully fledged version of XP.

Hello. THANKS SO MUCH. That was quick. I will send a copy of that in notepad to you in a bit as soon as I check on how to do it and copy the report.

I am using a rental and need to get the specs for my 98se so will send when I get them. I know it was upgraded in RAM to 5 hundred and something. Will try to hook it up and get the rest for you
