Hi Madmonkey,

Yep, still here and still having problems (remainder of paragraph is whining, feel free to skip...). Had a brilliant thought that it was the TCP/IP settings and called compuserve help. One rep had some ideas that I tried and none worked. The second person decided it was windsock (winsock?). Found a utility to uninstall and then reinstall. No changes in the performance. Thought it might be a java issue - can't download java through compuserve. Can't access the other browsers to download it.

Do you really think downloading IE7 (at least 4 hours there on dialup) and installing it over the current IE6 will help?

This all started when I either tried to hook two computers up to share files or when I was cleaning out old files. I may have changed a setting when trying to get the computers to recognize each other. The attempt was not successful, so when I need to work on computer B I have to switch over the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. This is not efficient (or fun, either...).

I was away for about a week with a family issue but am back again and willing to continue to try to get this to work.

Thanks for your guidance so far - I have learned a lot!

Excuse me for butting in... but you are getting reliable dialup number service, yes? I mean-- you dont lose connection.?

You could try-- going here:

Welcome to PC PitStop!

sign up for an account (email address/password--thats it)

run the full tests (overnight ? if necessary) and see if it makes any suggestions at all. If it's a connection issue-- with your ISP it will catch that too.

NOTE: you do NOT need to buy their optimize program-- several people I've sent there have-- and felt guilty because I did not point this out-- this service is totally free from PC World-- and it has caught some oddball issues for me before. Optimize is a great Program-- but for dialup especially it probably is not worth the price.

From their website...

What do our tests do?

Our tests check out your PC looking for security risks, Windows configuration issues, or performance problems. The test uses a small ActiveX utility that you load before starting the testing; it takes less than a minute to download, and you're on your way to a faster PC.
The full check-up does all this: measures disk fragmentation; checks available system resources; analyzes device drivers; benchmarks the CPU, memory, video, disk, and Internet connection; looks for viruses and spyware in running software; and checks for common security problems. The analysis doesn't change any settings on your PC, and you'll be able to review our advice before making any changes.
Once the tests are complete, you'll get a detailed report with our advice, plus an inventory of the PC's hardware and software setup. You can send a link with your test results to anyone you want, or post the link on our forums if you have questions. So let's go!

If you can't run the tests-- maybe you could download IE 7 (also overnight) and try installing it-- either is worth a shot-- what have you to lose ?
