Unhappy ibm thinkpad password problem

hi

i brought my daughter a secondhand laptop running on windows 98se,its been working fine until she put a password on it to stop her brother and sister going on it,now nobody can get on it as for some reason it doesnt recognise the password, shes broken hearty and im not best pleased.ive tried removing the cmos battery but it didnt work, the passwork padlock screen comes up before the windows screen.i did read the ibm manual which says about the dimm socket and shorting thepower on password jumper pad R522 but im not sure how to do it has anyone got any ideas on how this is done or how to bypass the password?

Without knowing the exact model number I wouldn't know.
Does the manual give any indication?
