Default Monitor Goes Blank Randomly

I have an old IBM PC 300 GL running Windows 98 SE. The system was just recently completely wiped clean with a fresh 98 install on it. I believe the graphics card it has is a Cirrus Logic 5464 PCI.

At random times, the screen just goes completely black. It doesn't matter if I'm on the internet, on MSN, or the computer is not doing anything at all and just the screensaver is running. The screen just goes blank. I thought this might be a problem with the monitor so I hooked the computer up to my good computer monitor downstairs however it still went blank. There is no set time that it goes blank either, sometimes it runs for 5 minutes and goes blank, sometimes for 1 hour, sometimes 8 hours.

I only use this computer for email/msn and occasionally I'd use Microsoft Word to write an essay or something for school.

Need help.

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay..looks like your thread slipped thru the 'net (no pun intended)

Is it possible for you to get hold of another graphics card to test as I feel it is certainly related to that (ahem) "senior" card.

^ If that will fix the problem then I'm game to change the graphics card.

A couple questions though as I have never changed a video card before.

How do I know what kind of card to get?

Is it easy to install?

Would I be able to get one from a local store such as Future Shop, Best Buy, The Source or a local computer shop?

And before I do all that is it possible I just need an updated driver or something? Could it hurt to try to reinstall the correct driver? If so, where can I find the correct driver and how do I go about reinstalling it?

Here is a driver you can try: Cirrus Logic CL-GD5462/5464 Driver Summary

The kind of card to get depends on a number of factors:
  • Your needs i.e. gaming, or just surfing and office work?
  • Motherboard slots, what graphics ports you have on your motherboard.
They are easy to install and there are plenty of guides on the net to help you.

So I just download that driver and open it ? This is fine to do even if the driver is already installed? Its just like reinstalling it?
