Default [Fixed] PC stuck on boot up - Windows '98

Hi, hope you all can help me!

My friend has a PC with Windows 98 installed and she is getting stuck on a black screen when booting up. All the screen says is:

C:\>REM (Header)

Mode prepare code page function completed
Mode select code page function complete

and some other BIOS info but no error codes.

Can anyone advise on what to do. We have a '98 boot disk.

Also, if I can get it working again, am I able to load XP over the top of '98 or do I have to remove '98 first?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Cheers
Alley711

Hi Alley

You can install XP over the top of 98 and completely obliterate it, however are there any files you wish to save?

What are the system specs for that pc running 98?

Hi & Thanks for the reply. Not sure what the spec is but there will be some files (like photos and documents) that will need to kept.

Will installing XP delete these files??

Installing XP will indeed delete all files you have on the hdd Alley.
However before you do, just burn all your personal stuff to cd or dvd, by this I mean the pics, documents etc.
Don't burn any system files, ie 98 files.
When you have installed XP then just re-install the program/s that you had before for example MS Word or Office for your documents.

Thanks Wolfeymole.
Will get the important stuff off first & then load XP.

Many thanks for your help

You are most welcome Alley, please get back to us if you encounter any issues.
P.S. Have a look here for a detailed explanation of installing XP.
