[Answered] down for the count
Well, My son took one of my older computers and I guess put it down for the count. He ran a disk called Wipe Drive thinking he could run the restore disk that came with the system. Its a HP Pavilion 8140,,Nothing is working on boot,,it does not reconize the CD to run the restore disk. One message says can not find OS system. One message says run FSDISK with an (A drive promt), but the keyboard does not work either. Pressing the F1 key has no efect on start up...If any one has advice for me please help,,And Thank-you for your help, oh and I dont have a boot floppy, so I got one off of bootdisk.com and no luck with it either.

Hi Mike
If we can fix this, are your intentions to install 98 on it or XP?

Hi Mike
Sorry to be so long in replying.
What your son has done is use a piece of software to completely eradicate all remnants of an Operating System on the hard disk drive.
When trying to boot normally, an operating system will not be found as, as I have mentioned, it is completely gone as a result of using Wipe Drive.
What you need to do is start the computer pressing F1 continuously (I know you have said F1 does not work but pressing from fresh start can).
If F1 does not work try F10 using the same procedure as above.
This will allow you to enter the BIOS or Setup in other words.
If you can access the bios please get back to us.

Ok,,F1 or F10 had no effect. The message. for both is Operating System Not Found. The Caps Lock,,,,Scroll Lock,,,Number Lock,,,led's on the keyboard are on and I can not change the state of these keys. It's like the keyboard is not functioning properly.

Does it go thru power on self test before you get the messages? If it does, it may say on there which key to press for setup. Im not sure about an hp, but try the f2, or del keys.
