Default [Fixed] Monitor Problem

I have a rather new emachine with XP and had many problems. I decided to install 98SE (cause I like it so much) BUT now the monitor will only disply 6xxX4xx and 16 colors (not at all satisfactory) I can't find a way to get 800x600 True Color (which is what I was using before on XP).

Is there a solution? Somesoftware I can download or what?

John

Hi Natch

You need to update your graphics card driver.
98 does not have an intensive driver database as XP has.
If you know what card you have then go to X site and down the driver for it.
If you don't, then get SIW from my sig, and that will tell you what you have.

Can I just say though, it's a real pity to have a nice new system but watch it on a 15" monitor.

Thank you, but I can't find the link for your sig. Sorry I'm new here.

Don't worry about being "New" Natch, we all learn.

Please have a look further down where it says;
"Need extensive system information? Use SIW"
If you hover the mouse over SIW and click it it will take you to the SIW site.

REMEMBER THIS BOX WAS SHIPPED WITH WINDOWS XP INSTALLED - CHANGED TO 98SE BECAUSE OF XP PROBLEMS

I tried to identify the graphics device using Belarc and like the system it says it's a "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)" There is NO device installed in any of the PCI slots.
Emachines says it is an onboard Intel Extreme Graphics 3D, I found drivers for this device on the Intel site and it won't install because "Device not found".

IN ADDITION I now find that the system does not appear to identify ANY of the PCI slots. I put 2 modems and an audio device in the 3 slots available and a search in Add New Hardware failed to pick up any of them.

I installed a modem using the install disc and the system won't use it.

AM I COMPLETELY OUT OF LUCK? Or what?

Much as you love 98 Natch I would seriously recommend that you re-install XP.
If you had problems with XP then come back to us with them.

Can tell you now.

On restore, using 3 disk restore cd's, I get black screen with several options (Normal startup, Safe Mode, etc) all restart and go back to black scteen, except "Last known good config" option which returns black screen with notation "file \windows\system32\config\SYSTEM missing or corrupted".
I found another string which says this is a merrygoround.

Also PC has been repaired and some original hardware has been changed probably making restore discs inoperable?????
