Question [Pending] Can I put this Hard drive in ??

Hello and Good Morning,
Today I want to put my 32gb which I installed on my desktop computer for extra memory, It was easy enough. I was learning last year and never used it. I want to put it into my daughter's computer. She had an older computer that has very low virtual memory. She has been without a computer for months. I've been on the phone with her back and fourth trying to fix the problem. I finally went upstate to do it myself, to find out I couldn't.
I brought it back home with me to try and figure it out. You see It was freezing up and when I finally was able to open it I immediately went to find out about the memory. I saw it was very low so I tried to restore it. didn't work, error came up restore incomplete.. I did try again. I don't know what happen to her firewall, puter says there's no firewall. Then I couldn't shut it down, she says she couldn't either. I tried "ctrl alt del" Error comes up no task manager. So I don't know what else to do but take out her hard drive and install mine. I'vr spent over 20 hrs. trying to figure this out this is all I come up with. What I want to know is Can I put this drive in and have it work and after that what would be next?? I would be very grateful if someone could help me with this one. I am a self taught person, It comes easy to me but this is a biggie.

Hello Arlyness,

Welcome to PCHF. As long as the HDD you want to install is the additional HDD, and not the one with the OS installed, putting your HDD into her PC won't work unless the PC has identical or similar hardware.

Do you intend to reinstall Windows on the new drive from your PC (in which case I will talk you through if you like),

Or try and fix the problems with the current drive. If so, I will need you to do the following:

- Make sure there is no dust clogging up any of the fans, and that the fans are working properly on the Power Supply Unit and the CPU.
- Follow the link for PCHF Prework on my signature to ensure there is no malware on the PC.
- Check you virtual memory settings in Control Panel, System, Avanced. In the "Virtual Memory" section, click on Change. Try set to "System manged size".

I

Hi madmonkey, I would have gotton back to you earlier but got caught up trying to get the system ready. What happen was I had installed the new drive on my desktop last year, never used it. Yesterday I turned on the computer wasn't sure which drive it was so I unpluged the drive I thought it was and the puter was still running. I thought great that was it. Needless to say when I pulled out the drive I neglected to shut down the puter and yes NO POWER. I believe I blew the power supply. Now I'm in deep because that was my backup puter. I have my laptop which I am using right now. I am very frustrated because I did put the new drive in my daughters puter and I keep getting an error message saying ERROR LOADING OS I tried rebooting I don't know how to configure it. I put the disk in that the drive came with still I can't get anywhere. I took out her hard drive to put this one in. I am wondering if I should have left hers in but there is really no space to put the new one in. I tried putting my windows upgrade disk in and nothing. I understand there is no system running so how do I out one in. I thought about using my flash drive to pull info from my laptop as far as getting a system in. Don't know how or what files to get on the drive to do that .If I can do it. Do you think you can help me or did I do it all wrong?

Hey Arlyness,

You can try leaving the power plug out of the back of the power supply for 10 seconds can sometimes reset the power supply, otherwise it may well be blown.

As far as getting your daughters PC working. If you want to install an OS on this, you would need a full version of Windows, and not just an upgrade disk. It not possible to use your flash drive for the following reasons:
- You cant copy an OS while it is running.
- You won't be able to pickup your USB pen on your daughters PC until your in Windows, which we can't get into.
- Finally, even if we could do this, it's illegal.

I can't imagin that PC running Windows XP on 32mb or 64mb very well, must be absolutely dog slow! She should have her original OS install disks. Otherwise you could put her original disk in, and I could talk you through getting this up and running. If so, I need some more information. Firstly, what version of Windows is she using and also the exact error message. You have no room for an additional HDD for your daughers PC?

Hi madmonkey,
OMG your a genius. I plugged in my desktop and all the lights started coming on. Thank You so so much. I don't even know if anythings wrong but thats fine that I can take care of. As far as my daughters you got that right slow's not the word. I have a lap 2 yrs old 80 gb. The other puter she has is 18 gb . I think mine is slow at 80. She does not have the original disk. She was running on windows xp professional which someone put in for her I believe it's a bootleg .. No firewall, no task manager, Sence this person put it in she has nothing but problems. The error message was low virtual memory. I'll get back tomorrow, Thank you so much
