Unhappy [Resolved] Win98, can't load drivers w/o CD

I'm attempting to load USB cablemodem drivers on a DELL WebPC. I have the correct drivers, however, when I load them onto the computer it needs the Windows 98 SE CD. I don't have the CD. To my knowledge, the computer originally came from a school or library, a friend of mine either bought it or it was given to him, and now he wants me to "fix it" :P

The computer has no NIC card; just about everything is done through USB, even keyboard and mouse. I need to do the cablemodem through USB as well.

It's nearly impossible to install anything without getting requests to insert the Windows 98 SE CD.

Is there anywhere I can download the needed files, so that I stop getting this request? Or, any other workaround? Upgrading the computer isn't an option.

Thanks.

Hi JeannaLW,

Welcome to PCHF.

Not really, you need the original CD to do this properly. I always tell people to make sure the have the original CD's when buying second hand or new. At least this way you are sure you are using legal and lagitimate software, and not something that has been copied.

The only thing you can really do, is when it asks for a particular file. Try to google it, to find a windows 98 SE version of that file. But this can take time and you have to be sure the file you download is for Windows 98 and not for another version.

Thanks. Normally I'd be sure to have the CD's, but it's not my computer -- I'm trying to fix it for a friend. I have another computer with win98SE installed -- I'll try copying the CABS folder from it, in entirety, and see if it works! *crosses fingers*
