Question [Pending] Laptop won't boot...unusual!!

I have this laptop that I'm working on and what its doing is when it comes on, it goes thru its usual post. It then shows a black screen with a drawing of a diskette drive with an arrow pointing (in an up and down motion), signifying put a diskette into the drive. But it doesn't have a diskette drive. And it has the keys, F1, F2, F3 etc. at the bottom of the screen. And when I hit one of the keys, it goes to another black screen with this at the top left, I9990305, with a cursor blinking at the bottom. Whats happeing??

OK! That's fine. Let me tell you about the laptop. It has windows 98 and its an IBM Thinkpad 600x and it has a pentium 3 processor.

What I think I found it might be, is the hd is bad. Cuz when I tried to load windows on it, it said disk could not be found. Through pass experiences, that what it came out to be. But, I could be wrong, can anyone confirm it?

I'm working on the exact same issue right now with an old Thinkpad 380ED. I can verify that the error means that it isn't seeing the HD, or, the HD has gone bad. The diskette with the F1..F12 keys below graphic means that the boot disk was not found; insert boot disk and press F1 to continue.

In my case, the HD is fine but the laptop isn't consistantly able to "see" it. Your problem may be similar, or your HD may really have died.

When/if I find a final solution for the laptop I'm working on, I'll let you know what it was so you can try the same steps to see if it helps your problem too!
