MadMonkey: Appreciate your tenacity. I see Intel(R) 8201AA/AB AC'97 Audio Controller and Wave Device for Voice Modem, both with no yellow marks.

Hi wakenaam, there are items missing from the list here. I believe the rest of the installation is being stopped because of your other devices which are not installed (PCI Modem, Ethernet Controller, PCI USB). You need to either get past these by installing them properly, or in Device Manager, scan for new hardware, and skip these, and the rest of the devices should install automatically.

I did as suggested but no change. I was talking to Dell support staff and they were telling me to re-install the Win 98SE OS, which I did. Only put more yellow marks into device manager. Giving up on this. Thanks a zillion for your help.

MadMonkey: A million thanks for your help. I tried the driver you sent but it did not work like all the other drivers pushed by Dell techs. The sound card shows up in Device Manager but strangely not in Multimedia, even the speaker icon is grayed out. Dell was telling me to replace the mobo. But I know the sound chipset was OK because when I dual boot the same system with XP the sound was just great, so I knew AD1881 chipset was good and so are my speakers and connections. I took the next step which was install XP over 98SE which I was afraid to do for fear of losing my music files. Anyways, I went ahead and everything is fine now. I still don't know why Win 98 did not work but I guess the ends justify the means. Great sound. Thanks again my friend. All the best to you. You are anything but mad.
