Hey Wakenaam,

In WindowsXP:
- Can you download this zip file for me:
www.madmonkeyflash.plus.com/temp/ac97.zip
- Open and Extract it to a folder you will remember, c:\ac97

In Windows98 (You will need your windows 98 CD for this):
*Step1
- Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager.
If you cannot see "PCI Multimedia Audio Device" go to Step 2.
- Double click PCI Multimedia Audio Device.
- Click Reinstall Driver, Next, Next.
- Click Specify a location, c:\ac97 or whatever folder you extracted to.
- Click Next, Next.
- Put the Windows 98 CD disc into the CD-ROM drive, then click OK.
- When the files have been copied, click Finish.

*Step 2 (If Step 1 fails).
- Go to Add New Hardware in Control Panel.
If you see "PCI Multimedia Audio Device" appear when autodetecting your devices, then point your way to c:\ac87. Again you will need you Windows 98 CD.

If not, Specify your own device from the same directory.

Reboot

If Volume Control does not appear after reboot, Go to Control Panel, Multimedia. You will see Place icon in taskbar here. Also in the Audio tab, make sure you have an appropriate device setup for "Sound Playback", "Voice Recording", and "MIDI Music Playback".

MadMonkey: Extremely grateful for your help. The sound in Windows XP works fine, so I know my connections, speakers, etc are OK. Will do as suggested for Windows 98 and give you feedback. Cheers!!!

MadMonkey: Now the icon for the SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio in the System tray is gone and now I have Intel 82801AA AC97 Audio controller in DM under sound, video and game controllers. I still have no speaker icon and it still does not show up in Multimedia in any devices. This thing is driving me crazy...

MadMonkey: No yellow marks in DM for this. The yellow marks I see in DM under Other Oevices (?) are for PCI Ethernet Controller(!), PCI Network Controller (!) and PCI Universal Serial bus (!). What I see in Multimedia is:

(Use any available device)
Game compatible device
Voice modem Wave # 00 Line
Voice modem # 00 handset
