Unhappy [Resolved] Win 98 and IE5 or IE6

Hi...this is my first time here so please have patience. I am trying to help an elderly laptop...which has an elderly owner. She wants to switch from her internet carrier (Enter.net) to USADatanet.net. She has the installation CD and when I tried to load it, it told me I needed IE5. I checked her computer and she has IE4. I went to a site that offered IE6 for Win982000...is that the same as she has (I only saw WIN98 when I typed in WINVER.) I can't seem to find IE5 or 5.5 anywhere. I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm trying to do this with as few obvious changes as possible to her laptop since my friend Rosy just has trouble hitting the send button. Any ideas? Thanks, all..

Thanks, Bugsey - I'm going to copy 5.5 over to a CD and take it over and see if it will be digestable to ms. laptop. I'm afraid if I try to download load it right to her laptop from the link it will take forever..this might too..we'll see. Thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hya Shirley.

I would advice to just use I.E.6, that works on Win98 so no need to use an older version. That would only make the pc less secure.

Hi, Joe5- Now that I know IE6 will work, I'll try it. Where can I find it? I see the SP1 and SP2 but not the original. Also, I did copy the 5.5 from the link above to a CD and tried to load it on her computer today. I wasn't able to get it to replace the IE4 that she had. I tried doing it through Add programs but that didn't work. I finally copied it to her Documents folder so there it sits. If I download 6 to a CD, how do I get it to replace her IE4? Thanks again..

I.E6 sp2 doesn't exist, but you can get I.E.6 sp1 from here:

Download details: Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 98; Windows ME; Windows NT; Windows XP Service Pack 1

And you should be able to install it just by copying the file to the pc, and double clicking on it to start the installation.

does sp1 contain everything I need to get IE6? I thought it was just an addendum to add to IE6 with fixes and such in it
