Default [Answered] Secondary Copy OS Help

Hi once again

I have been thinking lately about making a secondary copy of Windows 98 which is installed on my old laptop. I want to copy it and maybe use it on another PC/Laptop. Now I have read up a bit on the legality of doing so from Microsoft, and apparently it's all within my rights to do so, as long as I only make one secondary copy, and I can use it on as many PC's as I wish. Great news, but I was wondering how I would actually do this? I am a bit stuck. If someone could help me with the process I would be very gratefull.

Hey P-G-H!

You don't have CD's, just an installation on a harddisk?

I'm afraid it's impossible to use it on another computer then.

Thanks for your reply.

Turn out that I do have the disk. On the PC that I am currently using, I have Windows XP installed, but I am not too keen on it because my PC isn't very fast and I always have slowdowns. I was thinking about installing Windows 98 instead because it should run much much smoother than XP with 256MB RAM. I always find that 98 is more reliable aswell.

Instead of having just one OS installed on the machine, could i put WIN98 and XP together, and if i did, would it make the PC run less smoothly if i had two?. Like if i was using 98, would the performance decrease because i also had XP installed on another partition? Thanks for all the help.

Hey P-G-H!

You can run 2 operating systems yes, but I've no experience with it.

I'm sure though that you'd have to install Win98 first. The smoothness of your Windows installation are not depending on each other, so it would help for sure.

What are your PC specifications? Because installing Win98 can become pretty hard cause you'll have to install a lot of drivers and stuff.

So I'd say, think about it, and if you're sure you want it, we'll be happy to assist you.

Oh and, this will probably provide you some more information:

To install multiple OS on 1 computer, you need to start with the older first.

That being said...why go backwards in technology? People seem to forget how buggy previous versions of windows where now they're using XP and have the internet readily available at their finger tips...plus driver support is so far beyond windows 98 it will be an extremely large mission to make any new hardware work with 98 - if at all possible.

The only true bugless operating system that i can recall from Microsoft, was DOS...

I had a few problems getting Win98 to work properly. First of all I kept on getting a error message when i booted my computer that was saying something about a missing file thats windows or a wondows application needs. Something to do with SYSTEM.INI files and VNETBIOS.VXD. I hear it is part of the Microsoft Peer-to-Peer networking suite. When i go to access the internet it says it has performed an illegal operation and needs to shut down. And i know what you mean about getting certain drivers to work, it's a real pain in the backside. The main reason I want to have a dual boot system is just to keep important files on one OS just incase anything happens. And probably run a few older programs which run better on 98 than XP. Thanks for the help.
