Question [Resolved] She lost her internet!

I hope I'm posting this in the right spot. My sister just called me and told me she was doing a disk cleanup on her laptop, and somehow she checked a box or something about the internet or something, and now her internet is gone from her computer. I hope that makes sense. How does she get it back? Thank you!

Ok here's some more information. The internet is missing from her desktop. BUt when she goes to Programs and clicks on Internet, it brings up Internet Properties. Any way to fix this?

Was that on the Disk cleanup tap, or the More options tap?

If it is the first, then something like this shouldn't happen. But try this in that case:

Please download and run WinsockXPFix.exe

If it was the second, then I think she has uninstalled I.E..

Well, she tried downloading the first, but after her computer restarted, the internet still wasn't on her desktop, and in the start menu, when she clicked on the internet, it still brought up the internet properties. Then we tried the second download, and it told us that we already have a version installed and that setup could not be completed. We're stumped... any more ideas?

See if this helps:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP
Also apply's to Outlook Express 6.

Method I
From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Method II
The second method to try and correct the problem involves editing the registry and reinstalling Internet Explorer 6. The standard cautions apply whenever you are editing the registry. If you need help on how to backup the registry, click here.

1 If you are having problems only with Internet Explorer 6, proceed as follows:
[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: IsInstalled
Setting for Value Data: [Change the Value from 1 to 0]
Exit Registry and reinstall I.E. (see below)

2 If you are having problems only with Outlook Express 6, proceed as follows:
[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: IsInstalled
Setting for Value Data: [Change the Value from 1 to 0]
Exit Registry and reinstall I.E. (see below)

3 If you are having problems with both Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express 6, proceed as follows:
Change the values in both of the registry keys as outlined above.
Exit Registry

4 Once you have made the appropriate registry changes use the link below to download and install Internet Explorer 6. The Internet Explorer 6 download includes Outlook Express 6. Reboot and test for proper operation.

Download Internet Explorer 6:

K the first method didn't work. The second method, I don't really know if we did it right to begin with, but what we DID do, didn't work. It kept telling us after we tried to download the internet, that she already had it installed. I sort of scanned thru your "click here" link on how to backup the registry. We followed the exact steps in the Regedit file. From there, we found the Isinstalled, clicked on that and changed the value data from 1 to 0. But that was all we could find. Were we supposed to change anything else? It was all a litle confusing... We did the same with the outlook express, but still it didn't work. Aahhh I don't even know what she did to lose her internet!

Ok, she fixed it on her own. I guess she went to search, typed in Internet Explorer, right clicked on the result and created a shortcut. And there it appeared on her desktop, and it takes her to the internet when she clicks on it. So, I'm still not sure what she did, but its all fixed now, and she's happy. As am I. Haha. Thanks for the help Joe. We both really appreciate it! And this can be marked as problem solved. Lol
