I recently got a laptop from a friend that said that he couldnt get it to work anymore, when i turned it on it goes to dos mode and says that "vmm32.vxd is required to run windows, if this file is not int your PATH you may need to reinstall windows." I have the windows cd that came with it, but i need some guidance on how i can get this file d/led to make the laptop work. I know nothing about the setup of computers... sorry for being ignorant on the subject hopefully someone can help me.. thanks again..

Hi nkynursing, and welcome to the PCHF!

First of all, what version of windows has been previously installed, and what version of windows is the disc that you've got? (if it's different).

Once we have this information, we'll be able to continue helping you out.

Alrighty.

First of all, might I suggest looking at an upgrade to Windows XP soon? As Microsoft have decided to stop support for Windows 95/98/ME, so not only are these operating systems out of date, but they will become even more vulnerable very shortly with the amount of spyware/malware that can be recieved due to them not being upgraded.

That being said however, I've once had this same problem long long ago and know it is fixable but unfortunatly cannot remember how to do it off the top of my head (and don't have access to a win98 machine).

However...I have found this guide to help you fix this issue.

If you have any questions about it - come back and ask, and I'll gladly explain.
Good luck! and let us know how it goes!
