Just realised - by editing my post to put on more info and using 'quick replies' - - do these prevent the thread as showing there are new posts? answers? (I see some threads are in bold on the forum listing, but mine isn't as I write this). I"m new to posting on forums - so please help me a little to understand how it all works out!
Anyway, situation remains as in my last post that I updated/edited a couple of times...
Thanks.

It would indeed seem like your ram is the problem. Try removing one stick and then run the memtest on each stick separete to try to find out wich is the problem.

If you edit them then they wont show as new posts, a quick reply does show as a new post.

You will only see 'unread' posts (that you didn't read yet) in bold, and since you already have seen your own threads (whill making it) they wont show in bold for you. They will to anyone else who hasn't read them yet though.

Anyway, situation remains as in my last post that I updated/edited a couple of times...
Thanks.

Thanks, joe5 - (and also for comments on using forum).

I tried each memory stick in turn (sticks 'A' and 'B'), and in each of the 2 slots: so possibilities of A1,A2,B1,B2.
The software test still fails each time on test 2, and at the same place (52%) -
except when stick 'B' is in slot '2' - then it fails at 14% instead.

I don't have any backgound knowlege about memory, but it makes me think 2 things:
1) - the main problem is not the memory sticks?: (the test is signalling that it is testing L2 cache.
2)there is potentially a secondary problem with stick 2 - though strangely it seems to need to be in slot 2 to show it.

Where do I go from here?
Is the motherboard dead? Is L2 cache replaceable?

Thanks!

Yup, if they both fail then it seems it is more likely a processor problem, or maybe the motherboard.

And the only way to test them is by replacing them I'm afraid. Do you have spare parts to test with?

Thanks Joe5
-No, no spares at all. In fact I am usually a laptop user - got this rig to use some retro soundcard and midi devices - all seemed good - fired up and worked ok when I bought it... trundled it home and - well - now it is NOT well!! So I'm stumped.

Does it mean potential motherboard replacement? - the board itself has a slot one for the chip (vertical) - I have no idea what is available to replace/start again or what!
Is repair a possibility?

I'd be really grateful for any follow-up / advice you or the team can give me. I have spent DAYS on this, days which should have been in production... oh well!!

Your board is old...there's no denying it. Slot 1 boards aren't easy to find thesedays, you could of course try EBay. (ici http://search.ebay.fr/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.fr%2Fws%2F &fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=slot+1+motherboard&category 0=) It will be the cheapest way right now for you to test whether it's the board that is at fault....sorry there's no good news.

Thanks for the reply, Hengis.
Are boards sold without the chip or with?
I know 500mhz PIII is not so fast these days... oh but I'm really mega-dissappointed.. I got this to do a particular project but also experiment with music, synth - it has the Yamaha SW1000XG soundcard - can I go hunting for 'any old board will do' - so long as it has PCI slots? -
I really don't know my way here!
It's the soundcard/midi functions, as well as the -very - unexpected cost and time... ho hum...!!!
Before I give up - any other ideas on trying a 'fix' for what I have?
Thanks.
A very grey grayman here!
