Default [Resolved] explorer has died

hi, my father thought he was being clever last night closing random programs on the task manager screen. now when the computer is turned on DOS loads up ok, all drives are still being detected however when it comes to the final loading of the desktop, a popup comes up saying, explorer has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. leaving us with a blank green screen. nothing loads, no task bar, no nothing. CTRL+ALT+DEL still bring up the task manager but nothing else seems to happen.
any help appreciated
cheers
pete
