Question [Answered] RE: MDAC Install Problems

Hi folks,
I hope someone has had some experience with this. I was recently trying to install a new program (the Wimpy FLV player) but when I try to do so that illegal operation notice comes up and then I get a message asking me to make sure my MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) have been installed properly. So I went to the Windows MDAC Download page and downloaded the latest version (2.8) but it wouldn't install properly - I get errors indicating problems registering files. So I downloaded version 2.1 (the version that came with my OS) and experienced the same kind of problems. So I updated a couple of Service Packs - same problems. I then tried version 2.5 with Service Pack, and it seems to load better, but still gives me this error message ---> "Error registering the OCX C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\ADO\msado15.dll." I renamed the dll to old and ran MDAC again. It had no problem with that file but gave me the same message for a different file. I ended up renaming about half of the dll's in the ADO folder, then it moved to the MSADC folder where I went through the same process. It then moved to the ole db folder, with similar results. After I had renamed the last file in the folder, I installed MDAC again and received this message ---> "Incorrect version for source of DLL MSDASQLR.DLL." So I'm stuck - I don't know what else to do to get a clean MDAC install - the Wimpy Player clearly isn't going to work without it. Note: I need Wimpy to work because as far as I can tell, it's the only FLV player that plays MySpace videos on my OS - which is Windows 98 SE. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks. Steve

Default MDAC Install Problems

I am receiving the identical error registering messages with the same operating system. I have performed many of the same tasks that you have in an effort to try and fix it.
Has anyone helped you with this problem yet?

Hi george,

Welcome to PCHF.

steve, sorry nobody has replied to this thread. Did you solve your problem, or do you still require help?

george, for any problems and questions, you need to start your own thread so that we can deal with you on an individual basis, instead of using somebody else's thread, but since nobody has replied to this thread, and since your problems are absolutely identical, we'll continue with this one.

MDAC does have a lot of problems working on Windows 98, I will try to remember the fix for this off the top of my head, but it's been a few years. Can you try the following:

- Take a look at this web site under the section for removing MDAC: Terminal Services resource site ,make sure MDAC is completely clear from Add/Remove programs.
- Download and install this version of DCOM98: Download details: Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) for Windows 98 v1.3
- Reboot, and then reinstall your new version of MDAC.
