Hi Murchisonboy,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful team of techs here, and I am sure that we can help you get your CD playing again. I am truly sorry for the delay in answering your post.

What is it that makes you believe that the RAM is causing your CD player not to run? Are you getting a specific error message?

Can you please post the specs on your PC, including the RAMbus information? If you are unsure, you can run Belarc from my signature, then post the relevant information.

Other than the CD player not running, are you getting any other glitches?

Have you asked the person who gave you the PC about whether the CD player ever worked properly?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

I'll be interested in this answer... I have a feeling it is the RAMdrive that tries to load when one boots with the floppy...

Excellent questions, however, lady... I'll just be quite and watch! **==

I have 3 machines, all with this problem. They were part of a network ,belonging to a well known football team who have upgraded. The rambus is drive D:\ and the cd player is E:\ (which is not accessible ).I have read a bit about rambus, and if you use this way of expanding the ram , it causes the cd to be unusable for some reason, other than that the machines work o.k !Thank you very much for your interest and taking the trouble to reply.Murchisonboy.

Default CD Rom

This may sound silly, and if I am wrong, ladygreen will know it and tell you the right way... each of these systems seems to have an issue, as you said... but in knowing drive letters... often times if there is more than one device.. i.e.. 2 cd's or a cd and a dvd...the system does not know where to assign drive letters, therefore, it doesn't know which to use for whatever reason. Goto control panel, open system, goto device manager, click the +at the CDROM section.. it will show you all the devices you have.. click the properties on the one you wish... and assign it a drive letter. You will see what I mean in opening it that way. Once the system knows where to go, it usually takes care of the rest on it's own.

Hope this helps.. My apologies to Lady Greenwitch...

I'm sure you have other ideas and better solutions.
