I'll give that a try to...i am wondering however at something i just thought of. During the boot sets it says cdrom is a samsung. I replaced that with a philips cdrw a few years back. Being it is a different cdrom is it possible that because the philips cdrom drivers are not on the boot disk that that is the reason it will not read the system recovery cd?

Hi dragon, that can be the cause, but the drivers being loaded by the bootdisk are universal drivers, never had a drive that didn't work on those universal drivers. Hope the other disks do work :-)

ok so i finally got it booting with the hard drive. I was even able to do the sys c command though im not sure what that is...anyway now it will boot without an error and gives me the c prompt in dos. I type in dir and get the following
volume in drive c has no label
volume serial number is 2762-cant see the last part picture is fuzzy lol
directory of c:\
command com 93,000 04-23-00 10:22pm
1 file(s) 93,000
0 dir(s) 9,720,60 mb free

any ideas? I was able to reformat and then did something about deleteing the fat32 and then made it again...now i can format c again ....i dont have much hair as it is...before long i'll have none!

Hmmmz, it appears you have deleted your c drive, this apprantly is just the ramdrive.
Go to the floppy and enter:
fdisk
Delete all partitions shown there
Now create the biggest primary partition you can using fdisk
Reboot
Enter format c: (your new partition)
Wait
Don't access fdisk again, this can cause problems
Allright, now we're done and you can start win98 setup from the cd,
Bram
p.s. no need to sys c: anywhere, because the win98 setup will copy all necessary system files to your harddrive.

ok just so im clear on this...you want me to go to a: and delete every partition i can and then reboot. Now do i reboot with the floppy in or out? Then you want me to format c: again(it wasnt letting me do that again for some reason) then when i reboot do it with the 98 system recovery disk inside.

Yup, exactly, you need to delete all partitions, because I think something went wrong there. A small list below:
1. Boot using the recovery disk
2. Fdisk->remove all partitions shown
3. Reboot (use the recovery disk)
4. Fdisk->make a primary partition (when your hd is up to let's say 60gb, one partition is enough, when it's bigger, make a large and a smaller (extended) one, the large is going to be your system drive)
5. Reboot (use the recovery disk)
6. Format c:
7. Reboot (use the recovery disk)
8. cddrive:/setup.exe (or when a menu is available, choose 'setup win98')

Good luck mate,
Bram
