Default [Pending] A dead pc

Hello everyone,
I was given a Compaq pc. When turned on it booted up to the Win 98 screen and then said something like, missing "Hi Mem Sys". Don't know much but I know that's real bad. I tinkered with Norton rescue discs which made it so it only booted up to the Compaq logo and then said" invalid system disk, remove and strike any key". Got the HP tech on-line and tried to access the BIOS and couldn't. It's become a challenge to see if I can resurrect this machine. I've read a few pages of similar problems in the forum archives. Before I try something and explode the mother board, does anyone have any suggestions of something I can try to get Win 98 re-installed? I would really appreciate any and all help.

Hi Alfiam,

Welcome to PCHF!

When you boot up your computer, are you able to enter via safemode? (hit the F8 key when booting)

No, I'm not able to get into safe mode. Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried the suggestions on the site you named but got nowhere. I was advised by the HP tech to take it to a shop. But I don't think it's worth the price. But I'm stilll looking for something I can do. Is there a program disk out there to fix this problem?

Try removing the bios battery (and the power) for a couple of minutes, that should reset your bios and allow you to enter it again. If you need help with this...ask.
