Default [Resolved] Windows 98 Bootable CD

Hello, I have been given a laptop that has Windows 98 on it and it is missing multiple dll files. The only thing I want to do is boot it to Windows (which it will not do) and recover some of the data. I would like to find a cd image that is bootable and ready to burn because finding a computer for me to use with a floppy drive and finding a floppy will be quite troublesome.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi MrDoom!
Welcome to PC Helpforum!

I'm pretty sure http://www.bootdisk.com/ can provide you such a disk.

Yeah I have tried the 98 Windows Boot CD there and when I burn it I keep getting the error "Data verification failed".

I will just post what the PC is saying at startup:

"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the decive file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its unistall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

z:vvinesd.386
Press a key to continue"

After continuing it says:

"Unable to laod the dynamic library:

msnp32.dll

The system cannot find the file specified.

Some or all of the following feature is not available:

Microsoft Network"

After clicking OK, it says

"The SHELL32.DLL file cannot start.
Check the file to determine the problem"

After click OK it just sits with a green screen.

Have you tried booting directly from the Win98 CD? Some later versions are bootable cd's. Make sure that you have CD as your first boot device in the system bios.

Or you could give one of these 98 bootdisks a try:

I don't have a 98 Disk and I have tried to put the boot files on a CD but I have not had any luck with that. Are they even able to work like that?
