Default [Resolved] Win98 hangs on boot after failed printer install

Howdy,

Old pc running Win98 SE, not networked or connected to internet, worked beautifully until I tried installing brand new HP Deskjet 9800 printer. HP phone tech couldn't solve problem, in fact never heard of problem. Apparently, I was supposed to install software first and then hook printer up, but I was too stupid to follow the pictures on the gigantic instruction poster. So...

Pc found new hardware, sent it to look at setup CD and it began installing. Got to the 'building driver information database' and froze at 75%. Rebooting got the background wallpaper up and the 'new hardware found' window and then it hangs at 75% of building driver database.

Subsequently unplugged printer from pc. Same messages and hanging. A friend removed the HP folder in windows, and references in registry, and in temp folder. Still, the same error and hang. He then tried to repair with a Win98 install CD. It got to the point of analyzing the system for installed components and froze somewhere in the middle of that. Rebooting still gives the original error and freezes at 76% now. He removed modem and ethernet cards, to get basic system, same error.

I am dying here, ANY help would be would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Eliathp,

Welcome to PCHF!

We have a great staff of techs who will be glad to help you out, unfortunately Windows 98 isn't one of my finer points.

I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this though.

Default Fixed, well...

Howdy, I had to go ahead and format the thing. Got most of the archive files for my business out using dos. Took a while but hey. Hope y'all didn't put too much thinking toward this issue, and thanks

Default Scanreg /restore

Press F8 while booting up & select command prompt ..try Scanreg /restore which will enable you to restore the old registry before ur software trial.
