Default [Resolved] Compaq Presario W98/ upgrade to XPP

Hello all, I have a Compaq Presario that came with Windows 98. I just transferred all my files to a new computer, I used PC Relocater software to do the transfer, I also erased/cleaned the hard drive with Blanco Data Cleaner software.

I now have ?I assume? a clean hard drive. MY PROBLEM IS: how do I re install an operating system on this computer, I tried installing Windows XPP, after I accept the XP licensing Agreement I am asked to insert Windows 95?Windows 98 CD?etc. CD into the drive and press enter.

When I purchased the computer it came with only one CD ( Compaq Recovery) does this mean that I first have to install Windows 98 and then upgrade to XP.

Please Help

Hya maryanne, welcome to PCHF.

Sounds like you have an XP upgrade only disc , so indeed you would have to install 98 with the recovery disc first and then upgrade it to XP.

But can you maybe borrow an original 95/98/ect. disc? (since you have a legal , but not usable disc) Then you dont have to install 98 , and can just putt that disc in for a second and install XP clean.
