Default [Fixed]no sound

I am running Windows Me and have no sound. When I go to control panel/sound and select a sound than try to play it there I get this message - windows cannot play the sound c:/windows\media chord wav. Your sound card may be in use. Also I am not able to adjust the volume on the bar, plus the show volume control on the taskbar is blacked out.

From the system properies/device/ sound, video and game controllers/ listed there is Wave Device for Voice Modem and it says it is working properly. But right above that is listed Other Devices/ under that CM18330\C3D Audio Adapter is listed 4 times with the yellow mark- and when I look it says driver not installed. I have no idea what that is and would it be safe to remove those 4? Does anyone know what I can do to correct this? Thank you.

Hya Ochs , welcome to PCHF.

The "Wave Device for Voice Modem" is not from youre sound card but youre modem instead.

Remove those 4 "CM18330\C3D Audio Adapters" from the device manager , and reboot youre pc when done. Windows should reinstall the soundcard on boot up and hopefully only one this time.
