Hi, hope somebody can assist.

My stepfather tried to upgrade a PC system from 98se to XP! I tried to format the HDD to re-install 98se but every attempt ends up with me being told the format is being aborted due to the two instances of Windows running. Does anybody know which files I can edit or delete too enable me to format the HDD and anable me to install a fresh copy of 98se?

Cheers,
Benji

Hey there benji_fcum and welcome to the great PCHF.

The reason you are probably having this problem is because of the different file system, NTFS - FAT32.

If you want to do a fresh install then you will need to do the following:
  • Boot off your Windows 98SE CD and choose option 2 - Start computer with CD-ROM support
  • Once booted you will be at the DOS prompt, type FDISK and press enter.
  • If it asks you to enable FAT32 then say YES, then choose option 4 which should be DELETE.
  • Delete all partitions, once delete go back to the main menu and choose option 1 - Create Partition.
  • You want to use the MAX available space, once done exit FDISK and it will ask you to reboot the machine.
  • Once rebooted boot from the Windows 98 disk again but choose option 1 this time. It should automatically format the drive, you can then proceed to install windows.
