Question [Resolved] Does it make any sense to re-install Windows from within Windows?

I am trying to help a friend with getting her Hp Pavilion notebook computer. There are multiple problems. The computer OS is Windows Me. The computer came without a Win Me cd. There are only recovery discs that HP provides.
There are frequent crashes:
1. Cannot use System Restore without crash. When System Restore say it "will now restart your computer ", system crashes.
2.When trying to boot up using Safe Mode, the Safe Mode window says "click here to get to safe mode", the mouse pointer freezes and I have to shut the power off to get out since I can't do the normal Start/Shutdown.
3. Cannot use the Restart option from the Shutdown menu without system crashing.
There are other problems, but my question is this: I see in the Windows/Options/cabs/ file that there is a setup.exe file that will set up Windows Me on the computer. Does it make any sense to set up from there , or would I just be re-introducing the same problems into the computer??? I would attach the problem computer's Hijack This log, but I haven't been able to transfer it to here.

Hya Copal , welcome to PCHF.

In short , no. You'll end up with two ME installs next to each other.

It would be better to do a complete recovery with the discs supplied with it , or get an original windows installation cd and use that , but either way you'll have to backup everything you want to keep first.

Or indeed see if we can fix the problems and a hjt log would be a good place to start. The notebook doesn't have internet access? Can you use a floppie or (rewriteble) cd to copy hjt and log from the notebook to youre pc?

Red face attempting to attach log file from floppy

Thanks. Joe,
I saved logfile from her machine to floppy and will try to send it on from my machine to Forum. As you can see I'm new to this or any other forum so it may take a little while. Thanks.

Question attempting to attach log file from floppy

Hi Joe6, or anyone else who may read this

I'm back at my computer and I have copied the log to my desktop.
Is there a tutorial that will advise me how to get it attached to this forum page? It is in notepad form on my desktop. I tried e-mailing it to myself, but Outlook Express removed access to an "unsafe attachment". There's, no doubt, a simple solution, but I'm stuck right now.
If there's a tutorial, please advise. If there isn't, maybe you could create one right here?

HIJACK~1.LOG
Meanwhile, I tried adding the logfile as an attachment. Can it be read as a valid attachment as a text file? THANKS

The link works fine and I'm sure that Joe will have a look at it soon

First uninstall in add/remove programs if present: "Savenow" , "VVSN" and/or "WhenU"

Please download CCleaner

Then boot in safemode (hit f8 when booting up) and fix these with hjt:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VVSN] C:\PROGRAM FILES\VVSN\VVSN.EXE
Then delete the folder in bold , and run Ccleaner.

And it looks like you have 2 download managers installed , i would choose one and remove the other:

"Free Download Manager" and "Fresh Download"

Also it seems that there is no firewall installed , have a look in our download section for free firewalls if you want.
