A PM from Rog:

Thanks for the info Joe5, but I couldn't find where the links you said were above to download operating systems to work in the older gateway. Would it be www.windows reinstall.com? I got this computer together again and it turns on okay, but the screen says boot failure, insert boot diskette in A: I don't have a 3 1/2 in diskette drive in my new computer, so I can't make a new boot diskette in that size. can I just use my cd r/w to make the disk they need. thanks again for all your help. Rog.

Please post all info in the forum instead of in a PM.

If you mean the link with info on how to install an OS , then yes that is

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/

And specific for 98:

http://www.windows98.windowsreinstall.com/

I dont give out links where to download operating systems.

And you can indeed also use a cd , just copy the files to cd instead of floppie and boot from that cd. But have you also already tried to just boot from the windows cd and start installing windows that way? Maybe you dont even need a bootdisc.

Just make sure the bootorder in youre bios is setup to boot from cd before the HD.
Best is A=floppie B=cd/dvd C=HD.

Thanks again joe5, but I don't think anyone is understanding what I need and am trying to say. I need a windows 98 cd, that I can use to reinstall the system which was deleted from the older Gateway. I want to download windows 98, from a site, on to a blank cd in my new e-machine, then install it on the gateway, if possible. It says boot failure, insert boot diskette in A, on the gateway when I turn it on because the operating system was deleted by the previous owner. Now, do I need a bootdisk, or just a windows 98 cd to install this operating system to work? What about drivers, etc. Am I not able to just find a site to download the win98 system on my blank cd in my new computer? This is all I am trying to do, everyone, is taking for granted that I have a fully loaded cd with win 98, which I don't have. I hope this makes sense. Thanks, and any help appreciated, rog.

So you dont have an OS cd at all , and you are asking where you can download windows 98 for free ??

That is illegal and against PCHF's rules. I can't help you with that.
