Default [Fixed] CD wont recognize disk

Hi, I am trying to install a new I/O Magic DVDRW drive in a Windows ME machine. When the machine boots the drive is recognized by name, windows explorer recognizes the drive as Compact Disk. When I try to read a disk I receive "Please insert disk". The drive runs and the light flashes but nothing else.

I tried another CD Rom and the same results, but when I tried the original CD Rom it works as expected.

I have updated Bios and loaded the latest driver for the DVDRW. I have tried different cables. I am out of ideas.

TIA
Ronnie

Welcome to the forum,

Can you post the full make and model number of the drive you are having difficulty with.

Sure, the DVD is a I/O Magic IDVD16DL and the second CD drive that I tried is a Acer 656A-002. The orginial CD drive that does work is a Delta 4400A.

The motherboard is a Soyo 6BA+.

I have also tried all drives as Primary Slave and Secondary Master and Slave, changing jumpers each time and have even tried Cable Select.

So, in a nutshell I have tried different drives, different cables, different settings, ran anti-virus, ran Spybot, ran ad-aware, updated drivers and bios. All that I can figure is left is OS and I am not that knowledgeable with Windows ME.

Now, I have also fomatted HD rebooted and bios detected all drives but still would not work, installed Win98 SE. And I still have the problem.

Someone HELP. I dont think its the motherboard because the CD that works works on all possible channels, but it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

Hi RonnieR

Have you had the chance to try the CD drive in another PC or another CD drive in your PC. With the amount of things that you have tried (especially the cable replacement and the re-install of Windows) I am beginning to suspect the actual drive itself.

Thanks, I ASSUMED that a new drive right out of the box couldn't be bad, and to top it off tried another bad drive. Time to clean out the desk drawers. I took the drive back to the store and installed the newest drive and presto-chango it all works!!

Thank ya, thank ya thank ya:cheesy:
