I don't have that option when I rmb click "My Computer". Is there another way to get to some sort of error log file?

Hmmm...my fault, I didn't notice this was in the 95/98 forum

Try this amazing FREE application suite: Open Office it's just as good as the Office version you are using and it will prove whether it's the documents or the program that are at fault here.

Ok, I now have OpenOffice installed. I was able to open an excel file (24k) into scalc.exe via rmb "open with...". This took ~ 10 sec. I tried to open the same file by double clicking. after ~45 sec I got the error message posted above and excel opened without the file. I could then open the file thru File>open>etc. in ~10 sec.

This had tempted my to give up on MS Office until Open Office locked up trying to open one of my large spreadsheets (5 MB).

So the probem appears to be with Excel but not something that gets removed during an uninstall...?

Thanks for your help so far!

Yes you're right that could fix it. If that does'nt work, while in excel click help and try detect and repair... You could also try doing the same thing in Word. It may be useless help, but its worth a try.

 Hey Guys,

@Fastback, I think it's time we looked to see if your problem could be malware related. The fact that you were using the programs with no difficulty and then they suddenly stopped working properly sends up a big red flag for me.

Can you please follow the instructions in the PreWork link in my signature, ignore the ewido part, it is not compatible with ME. Post back the resulting HijackThis log. Also, can you please download the RegSupremePro from my signature and install it. I'll give you the instructions for that after we take a look at your HJT log.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN
