Default [Resolved] Strange problems

I've just dug out an old pc which had worked really well for me until it decided to start misbehaving a couple of years ago. I connected it up because I wanted to get an mp3 off it using a storage device (actually a camera that asks as a removable disk).

Here are some of the details of my problem...

- using windows me
- not sure which version of outpost but i think it's quite old
- I cannot access the control panel except in safe mode
- tried uninstalling a firewall called outpost in safe mode...was still there after reboot despite saying it'd gone.
- cannot use outlook/ie etc but when I rang my broadband support they confirmed I have a connection. Internet Explorer just comes up with page cannot be displayed.
- cannot copy and paste or drag and drop anything from it's original folder into a new folder (eg. the mp3 I wanted to copy)
- cannot launch system restore

Anyone got any ideas? My problem is compounded by the fact my laptop has just died and I'm typing this message on the worst machine I have, even if it is the only one that works right now!

Is there something I can download to diagnose my problem perhaps? Or to restore whatever isn't right?

Hi there Propertop , welcome to PCHF.

I don't really know what to make of it yet.
How did that pc work when you used it last?

 Hey Propertop,

I am with Joe, we have lots of other questions we need answered before we can begin a diagnosis.

Can you please tell us the details of the original PC, we know you are using ME on it, can you please give us the details of the system? Also, were all of the updates done on the ME system? Can you please follow the instructions for Prework in my signature, ignore the ewido part, and post back HijackThis log? That will give us a running start at troubleshooting your problem.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW

Only problem is, having asked if there is anything I can download I forgot I can't access the web in the usual ways and have so far struggled to do anything other than the basics. It's a strange one! There are things on there I really need...videos I made of my son when he was a few months old etc....huge sentimental value which is why I want to try and get it working somehow rather than just starting from scratch.

I wouldn't know where to start diagnosing this problem , it sounds like a fresh install would be the best solution.

But to save files , you could always hook up the drive as a slave drive to an other pc and backup all youre data first. Then place it back and do a fresh install.

Hey Guys,

@Proper, I was just going to suggest the same thing. If the critical part is getting the data off of the PC, you might even try booting into safe mode and burning the data to cds. Other wise hooking up the HD as a slave to the PC you are currently using is the safest way to save those very precious files.

If you aren't sure how to do it, we can walk you through the process.

Then you can replace the Hard Drive, and do a fresh reformat/reinstall.

@Joe, just want to verify that the HD as slave will work regardless of the OS on the other PC.

Not always , like you can't do this with an NTFS formatted partition and hook it up an win98 (FAT32) pc.
