Default [Fixed] Missing WOL558.vxd file after Win 98 update

Well, getting closer to the end of the road (sigh). Got my dual boot working, got my bad recycle bin recreated, ran Windows update and downloaded a boatload of security updates plus some kind of network adapter update, which apparently was not a good idea as it killed a file called WOL558.vxd, and now I can't connect to the internet.

I located this file online and since I'm dual boot, I have pretty easy access to anything on the Win 98 drive. Where should I put this file? Is it ok if I just put it there (wherever "there" is) and restart, or do I need to do this opening up/removing/replacing cards business I'm reading about here & there?

I want to do it right, not quick.

- Bob

Hey Bob,

If you are sure that the `network adapter update` is what caused the problem then you should be able to remove it from add/remove programs, this might restore the file.

Alternatively to answer your question you could copy WOL558.vxd into the following location
  • C:\WINDOWS
  • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
Remember to copy it into the windows folder of your 98 partition.

That file is part of youre network driver , it might be better to uninstall and reinstall the driver completly:

82557-based 10/100 ethernet pci adapter

OK - ended up getting it off Intel's site and all seems fine now. Thanks for the help (here and in my last few posts). You guys truly rock!
