Default [Resolved] 98SE Difficult to boot

I am now having to attempt 3-4 starts to get the 'puter to boot. First it hangs on the black screen just after the line "Verifying DMI pool data", so i shut down and restart. Then it hangs on the Windows 98 screen. When i restart again it goes past the Windows screen and hangs at the 2nd black black screen, there is a line on that screen that says something about a "system error: doublebuffer". The 3rd attempt might boot all the way, or might direct me to open in Safe Mode. I'm not too knowledgeable so I'll probably have to take it somewhere--but I wonder if you have some ideas of what might be going on. Thanks.

Hi there jacqry!

Have you changed anything before this started happening? And how did it start?

Welcome to PCHF by the way!

Hi, I think it got worse when I installed the software for a new USB card reader. I had been having problems shutting down, now the boot up is worse.

Is the card reader still connected?

there is a line on that screen that says something about a "system error: doublebuffer".
Could you post the exact error that comes up? Maybe this is some info on it:

DoubleBuffer=x. A setting of 1 for x enables double buffering for controllers that need it, e.g. SCSI controllers. A setting of 2 for x enables double buffering regardless of whether it is needed or not. A setting of 0 disables double buffering regardless of whether it is needed or not. I’d recommend setting this to 0, unless you use SCSI hardware, in which case set this to 1/2.

And on the other error:

Issue:
Computer stops at verifying dmi pool data...

Cause:
This issue can be caused by any of the following:
  1. Corrupt boot files on the computer.
  2. Settings for hard disk drive are not correct.
  3. Floppy diskette or CD in computer causing issue.
  4. Boot devices not set properly.
  5. BIOS corrupt or misc. setting not set properly.
  6. Connections loose or disconnected.
  7. Bad Hard disk drive or other bad hardware.

The card reader is not connected. Dosen't seem to be any difference whether it is or not.

(I am not sure if I should answer each feedback separately or all at once--I'm going with separately for the moment.)

I'll try to get the "double buffer" message. It is not one of those boxed error messages--its more like a notation on the bios(?) screen. It will require a hangup on that screen to get it. Once I'm up for the day I don't usually have a problem restarting.

On the other possibilities, I can check the connections, do you mean inside the case too? There are no CDs or floppies in use. I do have a scuzzi card installed for a scanner I rarely use. I haven't changed any settings, don't really know how to change anything in the bios either. I do have Windows 98 and 98se CDs and a floppy "boot" disk if any would be helpful, but would not like to re-install windows. . . .!Thanks.
