Connections loose or disconnected
If the computer has been recently moved or new hardware has been installed in the computer it is possible that a connection may be loose or even disconnected. Verify that the hard disk drive, floppy and CD-ROM cables are properly connected.
Look especially at those but just look at evering else just incase once youre in there.

Have a go at the options on that page and if you have questions , just ask.

Wow, I should have gone there (computerhope) immediately. I'll start following the suggestions--this may take awhile. Hey, I do have hope! Thanks.

I think its fixed! I booted up with the floppy using the fdisk/mbr instructions and I got a blue screen the first time. Then tried again, came up OK 2x so far. Thanks so much! Awesome.

That doublebuffer notation is still there, its the last entry on the screen that comes right after the Windows 98 screen. It says "Invalid setting in MSDOS.Sys file:doublebuffer". Do I have to worry about it, you think?

Alright , we have the first prob solved it seems.

Can you follow the instructions below and post the contents of youre MSdos.sys file?

1. Click the Start button, point to Find, then click Files Or Folders.
2. In the Named box, type "msdos.sys" (without quotation marks). In the Look In box, click your boot drive (usually drive C). Click the Find Now button.
3. Use the right mouse button to click the Msdos.sys file and then click Properties on the menu that appears.
4. Click the Read-Only and Hidden check boxes to remove these attributes from the Msdos.sys file and then click OK.
5. Use the right mouse button to click the Msdos.sys file and then click Open With on the menu that appears.
6. In the "Choose the program you want to use" box, click WORDPAD and then click OK.
7. Copy the content to a post here and quit WordPad.
8. Use the right mouse button to click the Msdos.sys file and then click Properties on the menu that appears.
9. Click the Read-Only and Hidden check boxes to set these attributes for the file and then click OK. Close the Find window. 10. Quit and then restart Windows.
Let's see if that helps but i must add that im not really familiar with this problem but maybe someone else has an other idea.

I "spoke" too soon. Finally was able to boot again, using fdisk/mbr from the boot disk this morning. So I guess I have to keep going thru the computerhope suggestions. I'll try the steps for the Invalid setting in MSDOS too. Later. . .Jacq
