Hi ! Hopefully someone can help with a problem that's been causing me problems for the last 2 days !

Windows 98SE
Intel Pentium 3
128mb RAM
IE 6 etc etc

I was updating some drivers the other day and there was one for my Display Adapter software / hardware which is Diamond Stealth III S540 ( i know, i know) My PC informed me there was an update on the Microsoft website for it so i thought i'd update it ( via it's Properties in Device Manager ). During installation of the new driver an error occurred. It failed to install so i left it. I continued to use my PC for 15 mins or so and then shutdown. Next time i started my PC it would go through the boot up process but as soon my screen was about to light up with Windows it would go into stand-by mode. I started up again in Safe mode and found that in Device Manager my Display Adapter had a nasty red cross over it and there was no longer a driver installed. I thought i'd be able to install it from scratch so i uninstalled it altogether.
Now my PC will start in Safe Mode but when i try to start it in normal mode as soon as Windows is loading it recognises the ' new ' device ( The Stealth card in my pc ) and starts building a database etc but then stops with the error message " Msgsrv32 caused a general protection fault in krnl386.exe at 0001:0000a300 " . I close that and all i have is an empty desktop with only Rnaapp as a running task ( discovered by pressing C/A/D )

I've had a Google and there are similar problems described on the Microsoft site regarding KB209321 and a dodgy dll but nothing seems to fit my problem.

Please, please someone help

There seem to be indeed a bunch of similiar cases on google but non is relevant i think..

Try to uninstall (if there is anything left) the driver again , then don't let windows install the driver but in safemode , install this driver for it:

I cannot install that driver as the whole thing is no longer installed. That's the problem - when Windows recognises the new hardware it starts building the database but then comes up with the above error message about Msgsrv32 and Krnl386.

I need to solve / get round the problem so as to install the card from fresh....then i can try that driver you've given the link for.

Take a look at this:

Its a driver cleaner that gets rid of drivers (figures)
instal that if you can and run it and it should get rid of the driver

EDIT: If all else fails, 98 has a handy thing that you can reinstall without losing your data (i've done it wiht 98se dunno about 98 so you could try that as it would redoo all the system things like drivers

After looking some more , either its a virus/malware prob , or its a prob that you need to contact MS for to get a fix for it.

For the first you can try the "free online virus scans" and the "prework" link in my sig to see if something comes up.
And for the second , i dont know why but they (MS) really want you to contact MicroSoft first before they are willing to give the patch..:huh:

I can't install anything as i can only use my PC in Safe Mode.

I've ran an online virus checker etc and the PC seems clear.

I could re-install Windows but would that clear up the problem that it has when recognising the Stealth card and building the database for it ? Also, i only have the CD, cannot find the floppy.

I was hoping there would be something i could do in Safe Mode to clear it up, or maybe a file that i could put onto to a floppy to copy onto my PC ( maybe there is and that's why i have to contact Microsoft ? )

I'm not sure either why Microsoft want me to contact them first - maybe get ?50 worth of phone charges out of me ?

I'm getting to this stage now -

Reinstalling windows should fix the prob since it has worked before , and i also dont know why MS wants that either , and the Q245583 link is dead.. but it looks like the mystery patch should fix youre prob.

But before doing anything drastic , wait abit untill the rest of the team has had a look at youre prob , maybe they know a solutions or an other way to get that patch.
