OK Hengis
Got myself a new hard drive Maxtor Diamondmax 10 200GB Just to give you some idea of prices over in France it worked out at $103.

So if you'd be kind enough to post the walk through instructions to remove & install the new hard drive I'd be very grateful.

Is it still then the same procedure to install XP home addition as per Merlins tutorial.

I see on the package that the new drive is in it says to handle it & work at a static free place, how do I go about that ?

Looking forward to your instructions & then to getting XP & my new ADSL modem connected & activated & fingers crossed getting back in touch again.

Please don't forget to mention the obvious as I have next to no knowledge of this kind of thing.

Merci
Dave

As far as "dont handle it" blah blah, lol dont worry about that. I have handled thousands of hard drives with my bare hands and not one burnt out. Just make sure your pc in unplugged that is all. As far as installing it , it's pretty easy after youve done it once.

Just open up the pc, you will see where your other hard drive is. There should be a ribbon there. There should also be a second part of that flat ribbon. Just connect the other side of the ribbon to the long slot on your "new hard drive." and put it your case and it should have came with some screw's to screw into the side of the chasis. Now you will need to hook up a 4 pin Molex (from your power supply) to the four pin on your new hard drive. If that does not make sense lol. Here is step by step with pictures for ya!

Am I taking the hard drive thats in out. Or is there a free end of a ribbon to connect to the new one.
No screws or instructions came with the new drive.
Again is there going to be a spare molex or is it the one thats in use now.
Had a look & read of the step by step guide, on the power up computer section, I need more help understanding the detecting the hard drive & changing the parameters in the bios, also no idea how to format for use with system.

Thanks in advance
Dave

Hi again Merlin.

I imagine your mega busy dealing with many e mails etc. I'm just wondering if you can give me some idea of when you will be able to do the tutorial for me.

Thanks
Dave

Default Icon Lnk problems

Hi again
Sorry to pester again, but I will be losing my AOL connection within a few days & then will not be able to see replies & help.
I've read up on installing the new hard drive & reckon I can sort that, but I've read (on Maxtor site) that to install a drive as big as 200 GO I will need to use a Maxtor big drive enabler. Is this correct?
A few questions
1. Do I take the old drive out (seeing as its holding the lnk problem don't really want that in)
2. seeing as I'm putting XP home in how do I go about that so the drive will be recognised, at the moment I have ME & only 13.9 GO
Should I put XP in before the new hard drive.
The new drive didn't come with any instructions, install disks etc.

thanks again
