Hi T
Got the recomended D/loads
1 How do I find the size of hard drive, is it any of these Mem 320.0 Mo Ram
System fichier 32 bit
Memory virtual 32 bit

Also got message System tres fiable 4% libre ( system very weak 4% free)

I did system Mechanic5 defrag
It said it "found problem on C drive, usually indicates physical corruption on disk surface, or other such structural issues.
Thorough scan disc operation recomnded."
I tried this but it kept stopping saying that other programmes running were stopping it, I left it on overnight but no joy. No idea if any programes were running could it have been firewall, anti virus stuff.
no other defrags Iv'e done show any problem.
New problem today also, printer not printing when something sent to it.

Still worried about the Lnk problem on files etc I've saved on Disk, when they get put back in to check they work the Lnk is on them.

Thanks
Dave

Have you maybe accidentally changed the path of your shortcut's? As for your hard drive size, just left click on my computer and there will be a C drive. Hover your mouse over it and it will tell you how big it is. As for only4% left. this can be allot of your problems, as Even windows ME needs 12% of your disk space open to work good/ You can go run a test

HERE And do a Full Test

And it will give you some ideas of how low you really are. Post back with what it suggests to do.

Default Saving files w/ .lnk extensions.

Hey Guys,

@Merlin, Joe didn't seem to think that Dave would have any trouble if he saved the files even with the tweaky extensions. As he's going to upgrade to XP (Yea!!) is it worth trouble shooting the extensions? Do you think he will have trouble if he backs up the files?

@Dave,

In your original post, you said that the items affected with the .lnk extension were Icons and Programs, if that is true, you wouldn't back those up any way. You would only back up the files created from a program, (and the others that I mentioned.) The program files will need to be reinstalled.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Merlin

I think I did accidentaly change the path of shortcuts.
Unable to do the test from the link, I can not enable the cookies, tried to find how to but no joy.

Seems the XP instal is the way to go.
Icons & programes are the main problem, unable to open documents also from start menu.
When I saved my favourites its come out as a load of numbers & figures.

I'll be going off AOL onto Wanadoo ADSL when I get XP running, so once telecom get it activated I will have to re contact with my new e-mail address.
I don't see this happening before the middle of next week & telecom give between 2 & 10 days for activation.
The wife will be pleased anyway as I seem to be spending most of my woken hours trying to sort this out.

Thanks again you guys, at least I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Default Favorites files

Hey Dave,

Don't worry about the format of the favorites files, they are not designed to be read outside of a browser environment.

As to your email information, the files I am talking about are only if you use Outlook to read and store your emails. If you only use the web based version, you won't need to worry about saving those.

Also, you didn't answer my question about which files were corrupt, if it is just the icons and the program files, let it go, it doesn't matter. Just get your pictures, and the contents of your My Documents that you want to keep, (great time to do some house cleaning  )

Trust me, you are going to be SO much happier once you have upgraded to XP. You are going to be your wifes hero.

Now here's the thing, you have a ridiculously small hard drive, if the information you noted was correct, 13.9 G? Hard drives are really inexpensive, and if you are going to go the XP way, I would highly suggest getting even just a 40 G. I'm in California so my suggestions for sites are going to be different than my brethren over the pond, perhaps we can get
one of them to suggest where best for you to go.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Sorry to be a party pooper but we need a full check on FC's system specs before we recommend an upgrade to XP. FC can you run this:Belarc Advisor and post your log here as an attachment. If you can, try to strip out the XP and other product keys before posting it.

Default Good Point Hegis

Excellent point, that's why you're the boss,

With the size harddrive he listed, I should have considered that, my apologies Dave, .
