Hi All :-D

This problem has been about for some 2 months now.

I have an old IBM Thinkpad 365XD, 1.2 Gb HD, W98SE, 40 Mb RAM (The maximum this laptop can have)

About once or twice a week, for no reason that I can see, all my Folder icons, Program icons and other file icons disappear!

BUT NOT MY DESKTOP ICONS?

1. Active? programs, such as my IE Browser (Slimbrowser) lose all their folders on the Links bar and Utilities bar.

2. All Open/Save As dialog boxes lose both folder and file icons (e.g. exe and doc files etc.)

3. Explorer and My Computer - no icons anywhere.

I have tried to see if there was some common action that I did just before the icons disappear but there is no pattern.

I can't find any Folder called ShellIconCache (This folder seems to come and go but not linked to this problem)

I once increased the Max icon cache number from 500 to 2000 in the registry but I can't remember where.

I have noticed that if I try to use TweakUI or right-click my desktop and try to change properties, an error message pops up with a RUNDLL32 error. Also I can't seem to launch any programs from my Quick Launch Bar and Start Menu.

Does anyone know why this happens?
Does anyone have a solution other than restarting Windows which is the only way I know to bring all icons back?

This sounds like a real pain. What kind of diagnostics have you tried so far? What kind of AV and spyware are you running, it could very well be some rotten little monster is your problem and not your cache. You said that this has been happening for about two months, did you install any software, or upgrade any software around that time?

You could try installing a regcleaner program which will help to clear out any unwanted entries that could be causing this kind of problem.
