Compaq Presario 7000T series
Pentium 3, 866 MHZ
Had Windows XP
1024 RAM

The OS was originally installed on the C drive. I do have recovery discs to wipe the drive clean and back to what it was like when I bought it, but if I can avoid doing that that would be great. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Hey Sonic Blue, I have a question, did this PC originally come with XP loaded on it? I had the exact same exprience but it was after installing XP on the PC that originally started with ME on it.

Sorry guys but I am having trouble figuring out how his IDE cables could have come lose on their own. Why would a PC that was perfectly fine suddenly not recognize the OS? Sounds like more than cables going on here to me.

Sonic, could someone have accessed the PC while you were gone, a roommate or someone like that? Sorry to sound so suspicious, but you did everything you were supposed to do, you should not have lost access to your operating system.

Also, Sonic, it doesn't seem like you went through the original process that Joe suggested, making sure that the bios recognizes the motherboard, changing the battery, etc. Maybe you should start there, and then see where you're at.

:-) Don't worry, I am sure it will be solved soon.

Nope, I have no roommates. No one was in my house while I was gone.

Already tried all that. None of it worked.

I'm damn sure that the underlying problem here is just that my harddrive flatout doesn't work. My PC just won't recognize it. When I tried putting it in a friends PC as a slave his PC wouldn't start. My other harddrive, the slave, on the other hand works perfectly fine when connected to other PC's. So the only thing left to do would be to purchase a new HDD? Do I buy a new harddrive, install it as my Master and then turn on the computer with an XP install disc inside? Is it as simple as that?

Change the boot sequence to:

1: Floppy drive

2: CDROM

3: Hard drive.

Insert the 98 or ME boot disk and go from there.
